Lolita Lebron is a Puerto Rican nationalist who led an attack on the U.S. house of representitives on March 1, 1954. She and three other men: Rafael Cancel Miranda, Andres Figueroa Cordero, and Irving Flores Rodriguez, walked into the building and opened fire, wounding Alvin M. Bentley, a republican congressman. They were arrested and as far as I know, Lebron is now free and living in Puerto Rico.
This was all to call attention to Puerto Rico's situation-as basically a colony of the United States- and a demand for it's independance. The violence was a reaction to the legacy of U.S. (and before that, Spanish) violence island. Currently dependant on the U.S. economically because of the situation the U.S.has created by destroying Puerto Rico's natural resources for their own economic and military gain, and in many ways under U.S. rule, many including myself view Puerto Rico's history of colonization as continuing today. Like here's a fun fact, Puerto Rican men can be drafted into the U.S. army, but can't vote in presidential elections. Oh, + they have a senator who can speak to issues in congress, but he doesn't get a vote. I'm not even gonna try to sum up U.S.-Puerto Rican relations/history any further than that, but I'll list some resources is you want to learn more about their extreme fucked up ness.
But anyway, Lebron and many others had had enough, but how do you make a government who will not listen to you sit up and take notice? Obviously Lebron's plan worked in that regard, people fucking notices, tho her ultimate goal has in no way been realized. Puerto Rico continues to be a "commonwealth" (read: COLONY) of the United States, it is NOT an iindependant country. But at least she tried something. I have so much respect for this woman. I really just wanted to call attention to her as a kickass often overlooked historical figure (hmm, wonder why...), a beautiful woman (for real, when I first saw her picture I was like damn, she's gorgeous...+ superslick too) who led three men and fucking shot a republican congressman because sometimes there is no other way...I'm not all like, rah rah violence, but sometimes there is no other option, + maybe this was the case. A sane person can only be smacked around so many times before they're like, hmm...maybe I should smack them back. That is not insane, that is logic. (also may I point out that the U.S.'s violence for it's independance is all noble and just, while Puerto Rico's [+ Cuba's etc etc etc] is brutal, crazy, WRONG, whatever...a bunch of white men (dressed up as Indians by the way-our country's history is WEIRD) can dump tea into the Ocean + all that stupid crap, but no one else is entitled to fight for their own freedom.)
